Buliisa District, Uganda – Shock and grief have engulfed Buliisa District after lightning struck a group of pupils at St. Agustin Nursery and Primary School in Sominso Village, Bugoigo Parish, Butiaba Sub County — killing one child on the spot and leaving five others hospitalized.

The deceased has been identified as Desmon Rwothmiyo, a 6-year-old pupil.

Those injured include Atuhura Salama (P.5), Giramia Coslate (P.4), Prisila Ayomirwoth (P.1), Acel Maber Tasha (Top Class), and Giramia Gift (P.4) — all learners at the same school.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday morning 5th November 2025 at around 10:30 a.m. during a drizzling rain, as the pupils were playing during break time.

School Authorities Speak Out

According to Nickson Cwinyai Charles, the head teacher of St. Agustin Nursery and Primary School, he was away from the school at the time but rushed to the scene after being informed by staff members.

He said the matter was reported to police, and the injured pupils were immediately taken to Buliisa General Hospital and Biiso Health Centre IV for treatment.

Cwinyai described the tragedy as deeply sorrowful and heartbreaking for the entire school community.

Authorities Yet to Comment

Efforts to reach the police and health facility in-charges for further updates were unsuccessful by press time, as they could not be reached for comment.

The incident has left residents of Buliisa District in shock, with community leaders calling for increased lightning protection measures in schools across the district.
