KERICHO — Authorities in Kenya have uncovered a shocking mass grave in Kericho County, where dozens of bodies — including children, neonates, and foetuses — have been exhumed in a rapidly expanding investigation.
The case began earlier this week after police received reports of a suspected secret burial site. What was initially thought to involve about 14 bodies has since grown significantly.
Government pathologist Richard Njoroge confirmed that a single grave contained 32 bodies, including seven adults and 25 children. Some of the remains were neonates and foetuses, with reports indicating that the bodies had been stacked in gunny bags.
Investigators also recovered additional human remains, including six separate body parts — four legs and two hands.
Authorities have since sealed off the area as forensic teams continue their work. Autopsies are expected to determine the causes of death, with early indications suggesting that some of the bodies may have come from hospitals or mortuaries.
The discovery has raised fresh concerns, coming just three years after the Shakahola Forest Massacre, where hundreds of bodies were found in a cult-related disaster along Kenya’s coast.
Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances behind the case.
