The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces Spokesman Brig Felix Kulayigye has confirmed that two Ugandan soldiers were injured in an ambush by unidentified armed men in the conflict-ridden Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

It’s reported that the convoy of the Uganda People’s Defense Force came under fire yesterday along the Bunagana – Rutshuru road in North Kivu Province.

Brig Kulayigye said an investigation was ongoing to identify the attackers and the two soldiers were admitted in a field Hospital in Bunagana while in a critical condition and were later transferred across the border to Kisoro Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda.

While addressing journalists, Brig Kulayigye explained that the UPDF responded to the attack and the rebels, who were about six in numbers disappeared in a nearby banana plantation, fled, and Brig Kulayigye dismissed claims that the M23 rebels might be behind the attack.

Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been volatile for nearly three decades and remains home to more than 130 armed groups and the Ugandan troops occupy some areas vacated by M23 rebels.
