Shock in Buliisa as pregnant woman and newborn found dead in cassava garden

Residents of Nyalwera Village in Kuhungya Sub-county, Buliisa District, today are in shock after the body of a 28-year-old pregnant woman and her newborn baby were discovered lying lifeless in a cassava garden.

The incident was first reported by a young child who had gone to uproot cassava and later alerted neighbors after noticing what was described as a “big thing” lying in the garden.

Moses Tumwesige, also known as Tyagiri, a resident and neighbor to the deceased family, says they rushed to the scene and found the woman and her infant dead.

Local leaders were immediately informed and later notified police.

The LC One Chairperson of the area, Moreen Kwesiga, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Thociba, a 28-year-old mother of four.

Kwesiga revealed that the deceased had gone missing on Monday this week after reportedly telling relatives that she was going to visit her sister in Buhamba, Kitoba Sub-county in Hoima District.

She added that one of the deceased woman’s hands had already been eaten by wild animals, and she cautioned expectant mothers against giving birth alone, noting that the tragedy may have resulted from unattended delivery.

Police later arrived at the scene and are awaiting a medical team to establish the exact cause of death.

Efforts to get a comment from the Albertine North Region Community Liaison Officer and Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, Solomon Mugisa, were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable by press time.
