Police in Kakumiro District have launched investigations into the brutal murder of a 70-year-old man who was hacked to death in Nalweyo Sub-county.
The deceased, identified as Karuguze Twinomujuni, was a resident of Kyangemukube Village, Kijwenge Parish. According to police, the incident is suspected to have stemmed from long-standing domestic misunderstandings.
The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, said the deceased had previously separated from his wife, Tusemerirwe Muhereza, following unresolved marital disputes. Despite the separation, the two continued living in the same village, and the wife reportedly made frequent visits to her husband.
Hakiza explained that on the morning of January 4, at around 10:48 a.m., Muhereza went to check on Twinomujuni as usual and found him lying dead in a pool of blood at his home.
Police have since arrested a suspect identified only as Emmanuel, who had reportedly been pretending to be a close friend of the deceased. Hakiza said the suspect is being held to assist police with investigations as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the murder continue.
In response to the incident, Hakiza cautioned couples facing domestic misunderstandings to seek peaceful solutions. He advised that in cases of persistent conflict, partners should consider separating and keeping distance, or formally reporting to the Family and Protection Unit at nearby police stations to avoid situations that could escalate into violence.
Police say more details will be communicated as investigations progress.
