The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Fishers and Fish Conservation Association (UFFCA), Mr. Seremos Kamuturaki, has called on fishers to support President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the forthcoming elections, saying this will enable them to effectively lobby for solutions to their challenges after he assumes office.
Mr. Kamuturaki made the remarks on Saturday evening while appearing on Biiso FM during an environmental programme titled Linda Ebikwehingulirize. He was responding to concerns raised by fishers operating on Lake Albert, including limited access to funding, livelihoods support, and sustainable lake management.
He assured fishing communities along the Lake Albert shoreline that President Museveni has a clear and comprehensive plan to support fishers, noting that UFFCA has been tasked to advise the President on practical ways indigenous fishing communities can protect and sustainably manage the lake.
Mr. Kamuturaki said poor management and environmental degradation have previously led to the decline of several lakes in Uganda, a situation he warned must not be repeated on Lake Albert. He emphasized that involving local fishers in decision-making will help safeguard fish stocks, protect the ecosystem, and secure long-term livelihoods.
He urged fishers to remain united, follow fishing regulations, and actively participate in conservation efforts, saying this will strengthen their voice when engaging government on funding, equipment, and market access.
Mr. Kamuturaki concluded by encouraging fishing communities to back President Museveni and the NRM, saying continued political stability and government support are key to the growth and protection of the fisheries sector in the country.
