The Caribbean Community a bloc of 15 nations says the goal is to address historic injustices suffered by African populations and the lasting impact of slavery, including systemic racism. CARICOM is calling for a formal reparations package that includes official apologies, debt relief, education programs, and financial compensation.
Momentum around the reparations movement has grown globally, but many European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, remain hesitant. Starmer has emphasized focusing on the future rather than revisiting the past. Still, at the latest Commonwealth summit, member states acknowledged that meaningful conversations must begin.
A 2025 survey commissioned by The Repair Campaign found that public awareness in Britain remains low with 85% of respondents unaware that the UK forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean during the transatlantic slave trade.
Meanwhile, the African Union is reportedly preparing its own continent-wide strategy on reparations.
