U.S. President Donald Trump has returned to Washington after holding what he called a “successful” face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at easing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Following the talks, President Trump announced that the U.S. will reduce tariffs on Chinese goods, while China has agreed to lift restrictions on rare earth mineral exports and resume purchases of American soybeans — a sign of progress in a dispute that has strained global trade for years.
“I thought it was an amazing meeting,” President Trump told reporters. “President Xi is a great leader of a very powerful, strong country. It was an outstanding set of decisions.”
A potential breakthrough in trade relations
The Trump administration first imposed tariffs on Chinese products to pressure Beijing over the export of chemicals used in producing fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to the drug crisis in the U.S.
China responded by tightening controls on rare earth elements, key materials used in electronics and renewable energy technologies — a move that also disrupted industries across Europe.
President Xi acknowledged ongoing differences, saying that while the U.S. and China do not always “see eye to eye,” it’s natural for major economies to experience friction.
He added that both countries “can help each other succeed and prosper together.”
Next steps in diplomacy
President Trump said he plans to travel to China in April, and has invited President Xi to make a return visit to the United States later this year, signaling a renewed effort to stabilize relations and restore confidence in global trade.
