Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a distinguished statesman and a true champion of peace and regional unity.
In his condolence message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Rt. Hon. Tayebwa said he was “saddened to learn of the demise of Raila Odinga,” noting that the veteran politician dedicated his life to advancing the interests of not only Kenya but also the entire East African region.
“He was selfless in advancing the interests of Kenyans and the region at large; promoting peace, development, and good diplomatic relations,” Tayebwa stated.
The Deputy Speaker further revealed that there were several instances when Raila Odinga quietly intervened to help Uganda and Kenya maintain cordial relations.
“He has done that for many other countries,” Tayebwa added, emphasizing Raila’s role as a behind-the-scenes mediator and unifier across East Africa.
Reflecting on Odinga’s decades-long political career, Tayebwa said the late opposition leader’s life serves as an important lesson in patriotism and sacrifice.
“From his life dedicated to politics, we learn that there are moments when one must put the interests of their country first — something he did many times throughout his political career,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker extended his heartfelt condolences to Raila Odinga’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
“May God strengthen you during this difficult moment. Rest in Peace, Baba!” Tayebwa concluded.
Raila Odinga, 80, passed away earlier this week in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment. His death has sent shockwaves across Africa, with tributes pouring in from regional and international leaders who have hailed his lifelong dedication to democracy, unity, and the struggle for social justice.
