Former spymaster Gen David Sejusa has criticized Uganda’s government over reports linking the country to the possible deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man at the centre of former US President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration battles.
Sejusa said it was “shameful” for Uganda to accept to host such a person and even more humiliating that a US court has now blocked the move, ruling that Garcia must remain in America while his case is reviewed.
“What has happened to this country? No pride, no ideological sensibilities, no moral fibre, no SHAME at all? And even after our fall, we are found unworthy to keep an American criminal?” Sejusa posted on X.
US District Judge Paula Xinis issued an order stopping Garcia’s removal, citing concerns that sending him to Uganda could expose him to persecution or torture. She also noted that it would undermine an existing court ban against his deportation to El Salvador.
Garcia remains in detention in Virginia as his lawyers push for his release. The court is expected to hold further hearings in the coming days.
The case has revived debate about Trump-era immigration policies and the involvement of African countries like Uganda in third-country resettlement deals.
