Uganda is on the brink of launching commercial oil production, with only two wells left to drill at the Kingfisher oil field, according to Ernest Rubondo, Executive Director of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.
Speaking recently, Rubondo confirmed that Cnooc Uganda has successfully drilled 15 of the 17 planned well pads at the Kingfisher site, which will host a total of approximately 31 wells. Some of these will continue to be drilled even after production begins.
Despite this progress, Rubondo acknowledged minor operational challenges, particularly with delays in importing materials from outside the region and internationally.

Rubondo also criticized certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs), alleging they are being funded by European countries to discredit Uganda’s oil and gas development. He described these efforts as attempts to “blackmail” the project.
