More than ten persons with disabilities in Buliisa District have received a life-changing boost after being given specialized wheelchairs during a colorful handover ceremony held at Buliisa Community Hall over the weekend.
The beneficiaries, drawn from several sub-counties and town councils, each received a wheelchair valued at about 1.6 million shillings. The wheelchairs are not only durable but also come fitted with unique serial numbers for tracking, mudguards, storage bags, toolkits for maintenance, and adjustable features to provide maximum comfort.
To ensure that each wheelchair met the physical needs of the recipients, health specialists from Mulago National Referral Hospital carried out counseling sessions and medical assessments before the distribution.
Dr. Denis Nsimenta, the National Focal Person for Wheelchair Services at the Ministry of Health, explained that the donation was guided by World Health Organization standards, making sure every wheelchair was properly customized. He praised Buliisa County MP Hon. Allan Atugonza for initiating the request and closely following up until the distribution was successfully done.
