Buliisa District, Uganda – Parents in Buliisa District have been urged to stop the practice of renting houses for their school-going children, particularly girls, as it contributes to rising cases of teenage pregnancies and school dropouts.

The warning was issued by several district leaders and concerned parents who spoke to our reporter earlier this evening.

Florence Acen, the Deputy Speaker of Buliisa District Council, expressed concern over parents neglecting their responsibilities after placing their daughters in rented accommodations. She pointed out that this has exposed many girls to risky behaviors, ultimately affecting their education and well-being.

David Kyaligonza, a parent from Kigwera Village in Kigwera Sub-County, strongly condemned the act, urging fellow parents to consider enrolling their children in boarding sections instead. He noted that some parents opt to keep their children at relatives’ homes, but this too can present challenges.

Isaac Balaam, a parent from Kigungu Cell in Biiso Town Council, advised parents to closely monitor their children whether they are in rentals or hostels.

Emmanuel Ongey, a parent from Walukuba Landing Site in Butiaba Sub-County, highlighted that many students in rental houses are often seen loitering around trading centers and attending disco events at night. He said this peer pressure has left many parents heartbroken.

Ongey reminded students to remain focused on their education and remember the sacrifices their parents are making to provide school fees.
