Vendors at Duhaga Roundabout open market in West Division, Hoima City, have raised concerns over poor sanitation and the negative impact of uncontrolled hawkers on their businesses.
Ms Oliver Ayesiga, a vegetable vendor at the market, says unregulated hawkers are affecting their income since licensed vendors pay fees while competing with traders who operate illegally.
She added that customers often prefer buying from hawkers who operate near gazetted markets and sell at lower prices because they do not pay licence fees. She called upon city authorities to address the issue and improve sanitation at the market.
Vendors at the roundabout market have struggled with sanitation problems for nearly three years, following their eviction from an enclosed market space.
Mr William Musinguzi, the market chairperson, said they have been working with city authorities to manage the situation and that some improvements have been registered.
Earlier, they had complained of irresponsible disposal of fecal matter in the corridors of the bulldogs due to lack of latrines.
When contacted for comment, Hoima City Mayor, Mr Brian Kaboyo, said city authorities were aware of the challenges and that a lasting solution was being planned.
He added that he is lobbying for funds to acquire land for the construction of a modern market. Recently, during the launch of Hoima City Stadium, President Yoweri Museveni also expressed concern over poor sanitation in the city.
