President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni this morning held a high-level meeting with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at State Lodge in Nakasero.
The discussions centered on ways of strengthening Uganda’s health sector, with a focus on sustainable financing, boosting local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and expanding public health insurance as key strategies to build long-term resilience.
The meeting comes at a time when Uganda, like many other African nations, is working to reduce dependence on imported drugs, strengthen its health infrastructure, and ensure that quality healthcare is affordable and accessible for all citizens.

President Museveni emphasized the importance of self-reliance in healthcare, particularly in developing the country’s pharmaceutical capacity, while Dr. Tedros reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s health priorities and reforms.
Officials from the Ministry of Health and senior government representatives also attended the closed-door meeting.
The visit by the WHO Director-General is seen as a significant step in deepening cooperation between Uganda and the global health body in addressing both current and future public health challenges.
