WASHINGTON/KINSHASA — Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed that First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi is safe following a reported attempted break-in at a hotel in Washington, D.C., where she is staying during an official visit to the United States.
Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya said officials in Kinshasa are working closely with U.S. authorities to determine what happened. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
“I want to reassure the public: the First Lady is doing well,” Muyaya said, adding that more information will be shared once details are confirmed.
Early reports suggest that unidentified individuals tried to gain access to the hotel. It remains unclear whether the First Lady was specifically targeted or if the incident was part of a broader security concern.
Nyakeru is in Washington at the invitation of Melania Trump, where she is taking part in activities linked to the “Fostering the Future Together Coalition,” an initiative focused on social and humanitarian issues.
During her visit, the First Lady also met with Melanne Verveer from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. Their discussions focused on the challenges facing women and girls in conflict zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly the ongoing issue of sexual violence.
Nyakeru emphasized the need to strengthen protection for women, combat impunity, and promote women’s roles in peacebuilding efforts.
U.S. officials have not yet publicly commented on the incident. However, diplomatic sources indicate that security around the First Lady has been increased as a precaution.
Officials in Kinshasa have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue.
