Uganda U17 Boys’ National Football Team, the Cubs, have made history by advancing to the Round of 32 at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar following a hard-fought victory over France in their final Group K game on Tuesday.
The match, held at Aspire Zone Pitch 4 in Al Rayyan, saw James Bogere score the lone goal in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a precise lay-up from Hamuza Ssengooba. Bogere’s strike proved decisive, helping Uganda secure their first-ever World Cup win at this level.
Coach Brian Ssenyondo made just one change from the team that drew against Chile, bringing Arafat Nkoola in place of Innocent Asiimwe. Uganda entered the game needing a victory to progress, and the team delivered, holding off France’s attacks to claim all three points.
With the win, Uganda finished third in Group K with four points, the same as France, Canada, and Chile, but advanced thanks to goal difference and the tournament’s format allowing the top eight of the 12 third-placed teams to move on.
The Cubs are now set to face Senegal, Group C leaders and the only African team to finish top of their group, in the Round of 32 on 15th November. The winner of that clash will meet either Germany or Burkina Faso in the next round.
Uganda’s historic win has ignited celebrations among fans and underscores the growing talent of the nation’s youth football as they aim for a deep run in the tournament.
