HOIMA CITY – A towering heap of garbage that has remained uncollected for over two months in Hoima City has sparked anger among residents, who fear the growing waste poses serious health risks.
The massive pile composed of plastics, food remains, medical residues, and other decomposing materials has blocked several access roads and drainage channels in the city center, leaving an unpleasant stench across the area.
Hoima West Division Councilor, Joshua Byenkya Omumwoli, blamed the situation on poor leadership and called for urgent community sensitization on proper waste management practices.

Sunday Geoffrey Omubyasi, the NRM Publicity Secretary for Hoima West Division, also urged residents to take personal responsibility for managing waste at the household level.

However, Kasiimu Asiimwe, a resident of Bujumbura Cell, said the garbage crisis will continue unless voters elect leaders who prioritize effective service delivery and city management.

Although the Hoima City Council recently passed a new waste management ordinance introducing a polluter-pays system, sources revealed that some city officials have allegedly resisted its implementation for political reasons.
Efforts to obtain a comment from city authorities were unsuccessful, as the Lord Mayor did not respond to phone calls by press time.
