Farmers in Buliisa District encouraged to take advantage of new opportunities in vegetable growing as companies operating in the area continue to support local agricultural production.

According to Andrew Yoweri, the Buliisa District Mobiliser for Syova Seed Company, the training is intended to encourage more farmers to venture into vegetable growing, which he described as a quick and reliable way of earning income because vegetables take a short time to mature.

Syova Seed Company has organised a one-day training for farmers aimed at equipping them with knowledge on how to sow, care for, and manage vegetables.

According to Andrew Yoweri, the Buliisa District Mobiliser for Syova Seed Company, the training is intended to encourage more farmers to venture into vegetable growing, which he described as a quick and reliable way of earning income because vegetables take a short time to mature.

Yoweri has particularly urged women and other farmers in the district to turn up in large numbers to benefit from the training.

The training will take place today, Monday, at Biiso Baptist Church along Biiso FM Road opposite Goodfeeding Restaurant starting at 2:00 PM.

The training comes at a time when local farmers in Buliisa have an emerging market for their produce.

Last year in October, ALLIAD Company established a vegetable market at the Buliisa District Headquarters, which takes place every Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The initiative provides a platform for local farmers to directly supply fresh fruits and vegetables to ALLIAD’s catering services serving oil and gas camps in the region.

According to Owen Kiiza, the Community Liaison Officer for ALLIAD, the market aims to strengthen the local agricultural economy while ensuring a steady supply of fresh food for the camps.

The market prioritizes a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables including leafy greens like cabbages and sukuma wiki, root crops such as carrots and potatoes, bulb vegetables like onions and garlic, as well as fruits including bananas, pineapples, mangoes and watermelons.

Kiiza also emphasized that farmers must ensure cleanliness, proper harvesting, and careful handling of vegetables to meet the required standards.

Local leaders believe such initiatives will boost incomes for farmers and promote commercial agriculture in Buliisa District.
