On January 15, 2026, Uganda went to the polls following the expiry of the presidential and parliamentary terms.

The Constitution of Uganda mandates that every five years, the President and Members of Parliament renew their mandates through universal adult suffrage, conducted by secret ballot.

On Saturday evening,, Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, officially declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the winner of the 2026 presidential election.

However, several Members of Parliament (MPs) lost their seats to newcomers. Among the high-profile casualties was David Bahati, the Minister of State for Trade, who lost his Ndorwa West parliamentary seat. After failing to secure the NRM nomination, Bahati contested as an independent candidate but was unsuccessful.

Other notable losses included Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda, Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona, Nyendo Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga, Kimanya Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika, and government Chief Whip, Butambala County MP Muwanga Kibumbi, among others.
