Government has procured brand-new vehicles worth Shs35.2 billion for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors across the country, the Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has announced.
The minister revealed the development while responding to a petition by the Uganda Local Government Associations (ULGA) on September 4, 2025, which highlighted challenges affecting service delivery at the local level.
According to Magyezi, the vehicles Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups are intended to ease the mobility of local government leaders as they monitor service delivery in their respective jurisdictions.
“Government has procured brand new vehicles (Toyota Double Cabin pick-up) for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors. The first batch of 90 vehicles will be in the country by the end of September 2025, while the last batch is expected in November 2025,” Magyezi said.
The minister thanked the national leadership for supporting the initiative, noting that the procurement was backed by a supplementary budget passed in April this year.
“We thank H. E. the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for appropriating Shs35.2bn in the supplementary budget for this purpose,” he added.
He emphasized that the vehicles are part of government’s broader commitment to strengthen local government structures and enhance efficiency in delivering services to communities.
The Ministry of Local Government confirmed that distribution will be carried out in phases, starting with the initial 90 units arriving this month, followed by the remainder in November 2025.
