Masindi
Vendors operating in Masindi Central Market have once again called on district leaders to remind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni about the long-awaited construction of the market, a pledge they say has gone unfulfilled for years.
Their renewed appeal comes ahead of the President’s expected campaign visit to Masindi on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, raising hopes that the long-standing issue may finally be addressed.
The traders argue that while neighboring districts such as Buliisa, Kigumba, and Hoima have received new and modern market facilities, Masindi Central Market has been left in a dilapidated state making their daily operations difficult and unsafe.
Peter Wabyona, a vendor in the market, said it is disheartening to see other districts enjoy modern markets while Masindi remains stuck with outdated and inadequate structures.
“Biiso has a new market, Kigumba has one, Hoima has one but ours is still the same old structure. We are asking our leaders to use the President’s visit to remind him about the promise of constructing Masindi Central Market,”
Another vendor, Kugonza Olivia, expressed frustration over operating in dark, congested, and insecure stalls. She accused local leaders of ignoring repeated complaints raised by traders.
“We work in darkness, the stalls are unsafe, and the environment is very poor. Leaders have kept quiet about our problems,”
Cue in: “Kugonza on market…”
Other vendors, including Agnes Kabalimu, appealed to district officials to present a comprehensive list of challenges to the President ranging from poor market infrastructure to limited access to government development programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“They should tell the President that we are struggling. The market is old, business is hard, and many of us have never benefited from government programs,”
Cue in: “Vox pop vendors…”
The vendors hope that the President’s visit will reignite discussions about the long-promised upgrade and push authorities to take immediate action.
