KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni has urged the newly elected NRM leaders at all levels to prioritize wealth creation and the effective implementation of government programs.
Speaking at the closing of the NRM National Delegates Conference, Museveni congratulated the new leaders, noting that the party now boasts 2.4 million leaders nationwide. He emphasized that their biggest responsibility is to help households embrace income generating activities rather than relying solely on improved infrastructure.
“Tell people that tarmac roads, schools, and hospitals are good, but wealth is personal for the individual, the family, or the company. Even in Kampala with tarmac and electricity, the ghetto boys are still poor. Leaders must help people understand the issue of wealth,” Museveni said.
The President highlighted the Parish Development Model (PDM) as government’s “magic bullet” to tackle poverty. He revealed that each parish is currently receiving Shs100 million, with the figure set to rise to Shs500 million and potentially more if the funds are well utilized.
Museveni warned leaders against sidelining disadvantaged communities in favor of elites, urging them to ensure ordinary citizens directly benefit from wealth creation initiatives.
On service delivery, the President outlined priorities for the new term, including free education in government schools, rehabilitation of poor roads, and provision of two sources of safe water per village.
“You should put pressure on local governments to deliver. If we improve schools, roads, and water, the people will be happy with you,” he told the delegates.
