Kampala: Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has defeated First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga to become the Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), securing a landslide victory in a highly contested internal election.

According to results announced late on Wednesday night by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission chairperson and returning officer, Among won 11,680 votes, representing 92.8% of the total ballots cast. Kadaga received 902 votes, equivalent to 7.2%. A total of 12,582 delegates participated in the election.

“I therefore declare Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among as the duly elected Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) of the NRM,” Odoi said in his declaration dated August 27, 2025.

The victory secures Among’s seat on the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s top decision-making organ, cementing her status as one of the most influential figures in President Museveni’s inner circle.

Dr. Odoi said the election was conducted in line with the party’s internal regulations, describing the process as “transparent and peaceful.”

Kadaga, a veteran NRM figure and influential leader from the Busoga subregion, had accused sections of the party of voter bribery, intimidation, and abuse of office during the run-up to the vote.

Among, who became Speaker of Parliament in 2022, has campaigned as a mobilizer, unifier, and advocate for grassroots strengthening within NRM.

Her landslide victory consolidates her growing influence ahead of the 2026 general elections and signals a generational shift in the party’s leadership.

The outcome is expected to reshape power dynamics within the NRM, bolstering Among’s position within Museveni’s camp while raising fresh questions about the future role of Kadaga, who has long been a dominant force in party politics.
