The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has warned fans heading to Namboole Stadium this Saturday for Uganda Cranes’ blockbuster tie against Senegal to dress appropriately or risk being turned away.
Addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, Diana Nabuuso from the LOC Communications and Signage Committee said jerseys with offensive inscriptions will not be permitted.
“We condemn anyone wearing offensive jerseys, what we call ‘mini’s’ or any wording that disrespects public image. Such fans will be stopped at the gates. We encourage discipline, respect, and unity from all supporters,” Nabuuso stressed.
The warning follows a growing trend of supporters printing viral slang and social media catchphrases on jerseys, some of which organizers say undermine public decency.
Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the LOC Communications and Signage Sub-Committee, also clarified concerns about ticket sales and stadium capacity. He explained that although Namboole has a capacity of 38,000, CAF regulations require a safety buffer of about 4,000 seats.
“The effective sellout number at Namboole is 34,006 seats. This is a safety precaution, not mismanagement,” Dr. Mugimba noted.
With Uganda Cranes leading their group, excitement is at fever pitch as they prepare to face defending champions Senegal. The LOC has urged fans to maintain discipline and present themselves in jerseys that reflect decency as the match will be under continental spotlight.
Meanwhile, organizers confirmed that the quarterfinal kick-off time has been pushed from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm due to tight tournament scheduling.
