Buliisa District has registered a disappointing performance in the recently concluded Bunyoro regional Primary Schools Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) competitions. The event was hosted over the weekend at St. Kirigwaijo Primary School in Kibaale District, drawing participants from across the sub-region.
Biiso Model Primary School, which had won the Buliisa district championship just a week earlier, carried the district’s flag at the regional level. However, the school finished 11th out of 13 competing schools, falling short of expectations.
The competitions featured a colorful mix of traditional dances, creative drama, folk songs, and instrumental music, celebrating the diversity of culture and creativity among primary schools. St. Julie Primary School took the top honors as the overall winner, with Star Education Center securing second place.
Speaking about the results, Buliisa District Sports Officer Godfrey Muhumuza pointed to several challenges affecting performance. He cited limited funding for MDD activities, inadequate musical instruments, and a shortage of trained music instructors in schools across the district. Despite the setbacks, Muhumuza noted that this year’s performance showed a slight improvement compared to last year.
Francis Bainamugisa, the choir master of Biiso Model Primary School, emphasized the importance of parental involvement in nurturing children’s talents. He appealed to parents to actively support their children’s interests in Music, Dance, and Drama, stressing that encouragement at home is key to unlocking and developing artistic potential.
The MDD competitions continue to serve as an important platform for children in the Bunyoro sub-region to showcase their creativity, preserve cultural heritage, and build confidence through performance. For Buliisa, however, the results highlight the urgent need for greater investment and support if the district is to compete favorably in future editions.
