The Ministry of Works and Transport is stepping up efforts to regulate water transport on Uganda’s lakes, with a strong focus on improving safety and security.
During a stakeholder engagement held today in Butiaba Town Council, organized in partnership with the Safe Transport Action Support Uganda (STASSU), ministry officials outlined a range of upcoming initiatives. These include the introduction of licensing systems, the establishment of search and rescue centers, and the development of a national maritime transport strategy.
The ministry also revealed plans to train boat builders and engine operators in the region, aiming to ensure higher safety standards and better service delivery across the sector.
