Jinja – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced that advanced radar systems are now active on Lake Albert (Mwitanzige) as part of government efforts to crack down on illegal fishing and protect Uganda’s aquatic resources.
Speaking during a meeting with fishing communities at the Jinja State Lodge, the President said the technology is part of his administration’s commitment to securing the country’s water bodies. He noted that the radar system will enhance monitoring and surveillance to ensure sustainable fishing practices and the protection of fish breeding grounds.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of preserving Uganda’s fisheries, highlighting their role in supporting local livelihoods and boosting the country’s position in the global fish market.
He also revealed plans to introduce tough legislation to criminalise the importation of illegal or substandard fishing nets, warning that such practices pose a serious threat to the fishing sector and the communities that rely on it.
The President’s remarks reflect a renewed drive towards environmental protection, as the government seeks to balance economic growth with long-term sustainability in the fisheries sector.
