At least 22 people have been killed and 197 others injured following violent protests over a recent fuel price hike in Angola, according to government officials.
The unrest began on Monday after minibus taxi associations launched a three-day strike in response to the government’s decision to increase diesel prices by one-third. The price hike is part of broader efforts to reduce fuel subsidies and stabilize the country’s economy.
What started in the capital, Luanda, quickly escalated into widespread violence, with reports of looting, vandalism, and clashes between demonstrators and police. The chaos spread to six other provinces.
President Joao Lourenço’s cabinet convened on Wednesday to assess the situation and review the security and police response.
Authorities have not yet announced whether additional measures will be taken to restore calm or address public grievances.
