Nwoya District, July 30, 2025 — Army officers stationed near Karuma Bridge in Nwoya District have rescued a 23-year-old man identified only as Ashraf, who attempted to jump into the fast-flowing waters of the River Nile.
According to police, Ashraf had traveled from Kampala, as revealed by a bus ticket found in his pocket. In a shocking revelation, he claimed that a “mystic power” had instructed him to jump into the Nile, promising to float with him all the way to Egypt and back.
Authorities believe Ashraf may be battling mental health issues. He reportedly lost both of his parents and was unable to recall any living relatives during initial questioning.
Aswa Region Police spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed the incident and said efforts are underway to trace Ashraf’s family and establish the root cause of his condition.
The quick response from security personnel likely saved Ashraf’s life, and he is now in the care of health officials for further assessment.
