Uganda’s presidential campaign officially began on Monday, marking the start of a highly anticipated election season. The Electoral Commission released a comprehensive schedule for all eight presidential candidates, ensuring organized rallies across the country without conflicts in location.
Among the candidates are President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, in what observers say could be a repeat of the 2021 contest.
Museveni Seeks Another Mandate
At 81, President Museveni is seeking re-election after nearly four decades of steering Uganda through stability, growth, and regional leadership. In a recent press conference, the Head of State emphasized his government’s continued commitment to expanding education, strengthening health services, and investing in infrastructure as pillars of national transformation.
The removal of the presidential age limit in 2017 has allowed experienced leaders to continue serving the nation without constitutional barriers.
Call for Peaceful Campaigns
The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Mariam Fauzat Wangadya, called on all stakeholders to ensure the 2026 general elections are peaceful, free, and fair.
“Political leaders must refrain from inflammatory rhetoric. Security agencies must act with professionalism. Citizens must exercise their rights with respect and tolerance,” she said.
Other Candidates in the Race
Other contenders, including Bobi Wine, who came second in the 2021 election, will also be seeking the mandate of Ugandans. The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its readiness to guarantee a level playing field for all participants and to deliver credible results.
Uganda’s general elections will be held on 12 January 2026. Millions of registered voters are expected to take part in shaping the country’s future.
